Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a process where an arc is established between a tungsten alloy electrode and the workpiece within an inert gas atmosphere. The electrode withstands and channels the high temperature of the arc to the fusion zone. Both the filler material and the base metal melt to form a weld pool, which is protected by a flow of inert gas.
In Cold-Wire TIG surfacing, the energy required to melt the filler wire comes solely from the arc, thus limiting the achievable deposition rate. The Hot-Wire TIG process, however, preheats the wire using a separate electrical current from an additional power source, leveraging the Joule effect. This significantly increases both the deposition rate and overall productivity.
The automatic TIG surfacing welding process produces smooth and consistent surface finishes with minimal thickness variation when used in the production of corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) surfacing for valve tube sheets. The weld overlay exhibits "zero-defect" characteristics: no porosity, no lack of fusion, and particularly low dilution, which facilitates subsequent machining operations.
